Medicare Insurance

California Medicare

Medicare is for individuals who are 65+ or disabled, BUT covers only 80%. How will you pay for your 20% gap?

When to apply for Medicare

The actual enrollment into Original Medicare Parts A & B is handled by the Social Security Administration (SSA) office. You will automatically get enrolled into Medicare Part A before age 65 if you already receive Social Security retirement or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefits; Medicare Part B is optional. Otherwise, you can apply for Original Medicare Part A and/or B starting within 3 months before your 65th birthday month. Everyone of all ages who receives Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits is also eligible for Medicare after a 24-month qualifying waiting period. If you do not receive your Original Medicare card automatically, APPLY ONLINE or call the Social Security office at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).

Part A and B Premiums / Deductibles 2023

Medicare Part A usually does not have a monthly premium because it was most likely prepaid with your Medicare payroll taxes.  The 2023 standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B starts at $164.90, unless it is covered through Medi-Cal or other California State assistance program. The 2023 Medicare Part B Deductible is $226.00, unless it is covered through a private Medicare plan, Medi-Cal or other state assistance program. The Part A 2023 deductible for an inpatient hospital stay is $1,600. This deductible is not an annual one; it applies for each benefit period, which begins at hospital admission and ends when you’ve been out of the hospital or skilled nursing facility (SNF) for 60 consecutive days. You may have multiple benefit periods requiring payment of the Part A deductible multiple times in a year.
